Orcus concept art

So in getting ready for the upcoming kickstarter I have decided that the stretch goals will need concept art.  People need to have some idea of what they will be getting from stretch goals and considering I don't have the cash handy to get all these demons sculpted before May I think this is a pretty good stand in.  As always I look forward to hearing comments not only about the quality of the artwork but what you think should or shouldn't be changed as the artwork turns into a sculpt.

This piece was done by Vojislav Vasiljevic.  You can find his DeviantArt gallery at the link below:

And now for the picture.

  1. I want to like it but I'm not keen on the face, particularly the eyes, nose and mouth. I'd like the artist to go back and reference goat photographs, demon-goat-men illustrations and early takes on this particular character from the 70s. Looks a bit comedy right now. My two cents.

  2. Many of the demons and demon lords started out in the 70s plumper, slovenly and more avaricious. I like the early depictions of demon lords surrounded by servants bringing captives for amusement. Over the past couple decades, they have been transformed into muscular melee combatants -both in art and in sculpture. Style seems to make these guys look as physically tough as their stats would suggest -but these aren't mortal creatures and a pile of goo can crush as easily as overly muscled arm.
I'd like to see this guy a bit flabbier, perhaps the same body style as Paul did the demon IV, and rather than striking with the scepter, holding it out in front, as if aiming it. Just my thoughts, I'm sure I'll buy one either way.

  3. I don't care for that pose. Perhaps something more regal or sinister would be appropriate?

  4. @ Iron Duke

Link to some examples and I will consider it. It will have to be a really good pose though because I actually do prefer the more dynamic posing personally.

  5. Would it be possible to make his wand a separate, detachable piece? After all, the Wand of Orcus is listed as a separate Artifact in the DMG. Ideally, I'd love it if the Wand was made in a translucent black plastic to simulate the obsidian that the "real" wand is made of, per the MM.
